LiNa Energy - Bring Your 'A' Game

THE PROJECT

I've been filming for LiNa since 2020. We've covered a lot and it's been really cool seeing their development as a company. LiNa is developing an amazing technology around energy storage. Critically, instead of using lithium which is a derivative of cobalt which is a finite resource and pretty nasty, LiNa uses sodium - yes! good old salt. Salt! I'm no scientist, but the idea that this technology really could change and improve lives seems massive. I feel that when I go and film them. There is a shared goal which motivates everyone - it's infectious. It makes me proud to think that research like this is going on in our small City of Lancaster. Whilst I have no idea about the science, my job as film maker is to go and make sense of what I am seeing for the viewer. Hence my latest LiNa Energy 'Who are we?' film. Altogether, my collection of LiNa films provide a compelling story of the direction of travel over the last few years. From our original film which featured 6 or 7 staff working in a comparatively basic lab, to major bid films for Haliburton and audiences with Prince Charles (now HM The King), we can see how much the company has grown in resources, research and vision. I was invited back to film with them again to show their latest development - the creation of a production line which will allow them to take the technology from the lab and prove that it can be scaled up through to manufacturing.

THE FILM

The film is a statement of where LiNa is, curated by members of staff. It's the perfect way to 'face' the company - to get the people at the coal face to tell their stories. My role as filmmaker is to put camera-shy scientists and technicians at their ease to help them tell their best stories. It's also about listening to them to try to understand the processes and technologies in a way that I can them produce a film which tells their story clearly and is accessible to as wide an audience as possible.

Films are powerful. One member of staff told me that watching the original 'Working For LiNa' splash film back in 2020 made his mind up that he needed to join LiNa - so he uprooted his family from life in the US and moved them to the North of England. That's powerful... makes my head tingle!

This latest film is powerful too - I hope you get a sense of the commitment and optimism which flows through the team. I hope you feel the hope that maybe what they are doing will change the world for the better.
