The San Francisco SPCA came to our agency with one simple ask, educate people on spaying and neutering their pets. What many Americans don’t realize is that 4 million unwanted cats and dogs are euthanized each year. That’s 1,866 animals every day in California alone. It’s an epidemic that can only be solved by getting more dog and cat owners to fix their pets. Doing so not only reduces unwanted pregnancies, it helps pets live longer and happier lives.
But how did the SF SPCA get people to understand the importance of getting their pet fixed, without being preachy? By creating the world’s first pet condom. Pretty insane, right? Condoms for cats and dogs?!! And that’s just why we did it Such a crazy idea drives home the message that spaying or neutering is the only real fix.
We installed pet condom dispensers in parks and other pet-centric locations. The machine dispensed brochures that looked like condom strips, and outlined the benefits of getting your pet fixed. Using Facebook and Twitter we spread the word to a wider audience. Ultimately, the SF SPCA pet condom campaign was picked up by 20+ websites (like the Huffington Post, Tosh.0, MSN, AdWeek, etc.), became the #1 trending topic on Reddit, and garnered over 30,000+ site visits.
