“Maledetti Italiani” (Damned Italians) is - without exception - all of us, caught in a strong national identity which is, in fact, weaker than our sense of community. Sicilian musician Colapesce, originally named Lorenzo Urciullo, is finally back after a long break following his debut in 2012 with “Un meraviglioso declino” that conquered audience and the critics (in the same year it won the Targa Tenco for the best debut album and several other prizes).
Colapesce comes back with a track that is a manifesto but also a social identity’s declaration and an indictment to himself (damned as well) and to the country that has been feeding and raised his own music.
The videoclip for Maledetti Italiani is the representation of the love/hate relationship italian people have with their own Country and with the personalities who built its greatness or told (and sometimes facilitated) its fall. This is a relationship full of humour, surprise, genius admiration but also resentment. Colapesce deals with a changing Country that has not the same 50 years ago face anymore, for better or for worse, in an unexpected way. Centuries of Italian history are told through the faces of personalities attacked with impartial brutality by the young Francesco Fallica, “new generation’s damned italian” and leading actor. He doesn’t spare anyone: the idea of “good” and “bad” completely loose its meaning. We are all italians, everyone is damned in their own way.
The videoclip - filmed by Ground’s Oranges with Zavvo Nicolosi’s direction - was shot in the studio of the artist Jacopo Leone in Catania, Sicily and ends with a pyre in which a picture of Colapesce himself burns, among politicians, footballers, movies, TV and music star, legends and proud italian culture bearers: it is the symbol of a separation from the past but also the symbol for the need of having a blank slate freed from idols, enemies and himself too, just like The Clash in 1977 used to sing “No Elvis, Beatles or The Clash”.
“Maledetti Italiani” is the first track extracted from a brand new album - still without a name - that will be released in 2015: it is going to be an album on which Lorenzo Urciullo worked with a brand new improved team
