Shark nets were put in place along the coast of Queensland more than 50 years ago. Some people claim that they have saved lives but there is not causal link between the reduced number of shark attacks and the shark nets. In fact the 90% decline of all shark species in the past 50 years is more likely the cause. Shark nets are placed in the middle of the ocean with 1/3 of all shark caught on the inside of the nets. They do not provide any direct safety nor is their any evidence that the sharks caught were or would have been involved in a shark attack.
