This colony of Convergent Ladybugs is native to California and has been living in the same spot here in Cascade Canyon for decades (centuries?). They always have 13 or fewer spots (and there's no special significance to the number of spots, with some having no spots at all). Every winter they huddle up for warmth and come spring they begin their half-year aphid feast. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippodamia_convergens (and a great description of how these beetles got their name is here: blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2014/06/ladybirds-ladybugs-cows/ )
