Determined to pursue a primary source at all costs, University of Miami Multimedia
Journalism masters' candidates Charles "Stretch" Ledford and Nick Maslow drove 1200
miles in twenty hours from Miami, FL, to Punxsutawney, PA, to secure an interview
with America's foremost weather prognosticator, famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil.
Stopping only to chat about Groundhog Day 2010 with people along the route, Ledford
and Maslow learned that Groundhog Day is not a universally recognized holiday, and
that Phil will take a bite out of just about anything placed within his reach -
including a rather expensive microphone.
Stretch used a Canon 5D Mark II camera, with a Zoom H4n audio recorder along with Sennheiser shotgun and wireless lav mics. Nick shot with a Panasonic HMC150.
The piece was created as an assignment for Rich Beckman's Multimedia Storytelling graduate seminar at the University of Miami School of Communication.
