Nestled between the city of Cusco and Machu Picchu, the Lares Valley is an unforgettable trek through the Peruvian Andes. Passing through small Quechua farming and weaving villages, it offers a rare and colorful insight into traditional Andean Life. Being welcomed by the friendly and curious children in the village of Huaca Wasi is an experience I will cherish forever. Traversing a pass of over 15,000 feet was no joke with the high altitude making me value every breath and step I took. The spectacular scenery was all worth it. The 4 day adventure culminated at Machu Picchu. It was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Its historical significance, natural beauty and mind blowing location almost brought me to tears. Breathing it all in, I felt a stillness I so rarely feel. My only regret was not returning for a second day visit but I have a feeling that was not my last trip to MP or Peru! I could not have picked a better trek company (Alpaca Expeditions) or guide (Jose Soto). If you are planning a trip to Machu Picchu and the Peruvian Andes, do yourself a favor and consider using this outfitter and if possible ask for Jose (guide) and Alberto (chef). Jose, a native Quechua Runa Simi speaker will impress you with his knowledge and prideful reverence for his culture and Alberto will delight and surprise you with his culinary talent! And its all cooked in a tent!!! Including gourmet dessert!
