Looking for ideas for “Wild to Inspire”, I discovered an amazing sanctuary in my own backyard in Florida. This facility has been built to preserve the worldwide genetic pool of one of the oldest species on earth: lemurs.
The Lemur Conservation Foundation (LCF) is located in a beautiful 100-acre old Florida pristine forest. The forest is secluded from the outside world to create a peaceful setting for 6 species of lemurs and simulate the best wildlife experience they can possibly have in a semi-free ranging environment.
I was introduced to Ansell and Yungling and their twin baby girls, who quickly became the stars of the story. The ring-tailed family, together with Ikoto, “the loneliest Stanford’s lemur on earth” voice an important message of survival and hope. Their natural habitat is shrinking back home in Madagascar. Political unrest, aggressive deforestation, illegal logging and exotic pet trade have reduced lemurs’ population to critical numbers.
I hope you will enjoy spending the next 5min in Florida's lemur forest with me.
