I recently finished lighting, surfacing, & rendering a shot my buddy Jason Ryan did in one of the iAnimate.net live lectures this past term. The more I dive in to Modo for stuff like this, the more I really, really enjoy working in the application.
Rendering was all done in Modo, comp'd in AE, and some final tweaks in Camera Bag. I pulled the scene in from Maya (split up a bit) via Alembic and reference the parts in to a master scene. I set up two passes for rendering, one for the background and objects (bookshelfs, vanity, etc.), and then one for just the two characters (Jake & Angela). Each pass then had an Item Shader that had others Visible to Camera turned off. The background pass had a zDepth output pass rendered with it so I could blur it separately in post. I really like how easy this stuff is to setup in Modo.
