On January 6 the Church throughout the world celebrates Epiphany 12 days after Christmas. A teacher asked her confirmation class: “If you had an epiphany, what would you do with it?” The answer, of course, required that the student knew that “Epiphany” means “manifestation” or “revelation”. The Christmas story (Matthew 1, Luke 2) is God’s first movement in revealing Himself to us in His Son, Jesus. The Epiphany story (Matthew 2) is another movement, where God unwraps the gift of the Christ Child for the Gentiles—that is, for all nations. Today’s songs and prayers lead us in our celebration of that global manifestation. So, here’s the 2015 question for us: Since we have an Epiphany, what will we do with it?
