Did you know that toxic shame isn’t just a normal type of shame that’s been potentized? It’s actually a completely different type of shame and it’s far more dangerous. As a matter of fact, normal shame is good for you. It protects you from doing crazy things in public that could potentially get you embarrassed. Normal shame goes away once you adjust your actions and you do what’s appropriate.
Contrary, toxic shame doesn’t go away. It’s always present because it’s engraved into your identity. It’s a part of you that defines who you are and that’s a big problem. Why? Because toxic shame makes you feel unworthy. It makes you feel ashamed and embarrassed all the time for things that you really shouldn’t be. It makes you feel less of a person than other people. It makes you feel inferior and this heavily impacts your self-esteem.
That’s why people who suffer from toxic shame often develop social anxiety disorder. You might actually be surprised, but toxic shame symptoms are exactly the same as social anxiety symptoms. There’s no major difference. That’s why healing toxic shame can often help you overcome social anxiety as well.
