Meet Franck Gohier at work in the Red Hand Print studio in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.
Gohier’s work frequently involves creating art through the indepth and often laborious process of screen printing.
In this short film, Gohier uses grey, red and black block colour and design to build the poster for the exhibition D.evolution.
Describing the process of screen printing Gohier says “I feel a bit like a robot” but he also says it has a meditative quality and can be more satisfying than getting digital copies made at a local print house.
This short film has been made for the art exhibition Devolution. We were asked to reflect on the critical theorist Walter Benjamin and his musings about art in what he calls the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. What could be more beautiful than watching one of Darwin's best contemporary artists use machinery and mechanics to produce one of his works - a poster for the exhibition. Pop eats itself.
