I first met Dan Bowen on a flat-bottomed oyster boat in the Rappahannock River just outside Topping, VA, while working on my short film about oyster aquaculture. He was an oysterman for Rappahannock River Oyster Company, and he and the other guys showed me exactly how oyster aquaculture happens in the Chesapeake Bay. After freezing our hands off—Dan harvesting and me filming both above and in the water—we headed back to the dock-house, where I eventually learned that Dan is also a talented singer-songwriter. He broke out his guitar and multiple harmonicas right there in the dock-house, and I knew I had to capture his sound for the film. Dan graciously agreed, and we decided to meet up in the coming weeks.
Busking Danny (Dan Bowen) plays his original song Trouble in Richmond, VA in November 2014. This recording became one of the songs in my short film Add One Back.
