Each year, around fifty students from Bronx public schools build wooden boats from scratch, then they use them to monitor the water quality of the Bronx River and its fauna. The activities are organized by Rocking the Boat, a non-for-profit organization focused on helping young people develop into empowered, responsible adults.

"It's like having an extended family." said Alberto Tavarez, 18, who has been participating with Rocking the Boat for the last five years. Photographed and produced by Jose Leyva.
