"The future is, and will remain, a sea of which no map exists" (Jaan Kaplinski: Titanic). The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 ended the Belle Epoque. As this unbeatable product of the human mind went down, while hundreds of people battled the forces of nature in vain, the belief in human superiority and the dreams this belief entailed were also silently buried.
In this piece by Jyrki Karttunen, the choreographer’s creation, Alla, sinks to the somber strains of Gavin Bryars’ composition The Sinking of the Titanic, recalling a shipwreck, a human-created angel. The underwater wreck is inhabited by five souls trying to find their way to each other. Loneliness and isolation from the crowd are, however, the only conditions for beginning anew in this watery world. One has to learn to be silent and to protect to bridge between the noise of the world and silence.
