Talk given to the Radical Anthropology Group at The Function Room, The Cock Tavern, 23 Phoenix Road, London NW1 1HB on 20 January 2015. Chris Knight is the founder of the Radical Anthropology Group and is also a co-founder of EVOLANG, since 1996 the main international conference series on the evolutionary emergence of language. His most recent book (co-edited with Dan Dor and Jerome Lewis, Oxford University Press) is entitled The Social Origins of Language. The talk reviewed various schools of thought on how language might have evolved and highlighted several theoretical problems, e.g. from what did human language evolve? and why would it be selective?
