This is a PROJECT VIDEO introducing El Bibliobandido (or “story thief” in English), a masked bandit who eats stories. Ravenous, he terrorizes little kids until they offer him stories they’ve written.
The living legend that is El Bibliobandido was born from a collaboration in 2010 between artist Marisa Morán Jahn and a library committee in El Pital, a village in Northern Honduras with an 80% illiteracy rate. To avert calamity — or perhaps to lure him — kids in El Pital have since prepared a monthly harvest of stories and spread the legend to 500 kids in 19 surrounding villages who invent new characters and episodes. Other communities around the world who feel they also need a Bibliobandido have joined in on the fray, cultivating their collective appetite for a good story.
As George Bataille reminds us, “Man does not live by bread alone, but also by the comedies with which he willingly deceives himself.”
