Christoph Keller – The Art of Distillation
Being not any longer a secret insider’s tip amongst connoisseurs, the various eaux-de-vie from Stählemühle distillery are recognized worldwide as the top choice when it comes to distilled spirits from fruit and herbs – and master distiller Christoph Keller is actually acknowledged of being a true „legend“ amongst distillers.
Not only extraordinary brandies distilled from regional fruit, herbs or exotic botanicals (like truffles, ginkgo, cherry laurel, bergamot oranges or even nutmeg blossom, chicory and onions) are being distilled in the small distillery close to the Lake Constance in southern Germany, but also the meanwhile iconic Schwarzwald Dry Gin „Monkey 47“.
Keller has been named „Distiller of the Year 2013“ (Silver) by Destillata and Gault Millau and has been showered with more than 300 international awards within the last years. Yet, the Stählemühle distillery is not a „brand“, but instead an agricultural farm, who is manufacturing handcrafted products in smallest batches – and Christoph Keller is a humble and down-to-earth guy who knows his craft: the art of distilling.
In fall 2014, Munich film maker Jochen Hirschfeld has accompanied Keller during harvest time, mashing and distilling, portraying the work of a traditional, small distillery. In dense atmospheric images the world of Aqua Vitae – the Waters of Life – is being revealed and explained by Keller’s personal narration.
