Could you prevent a suicide?

Suffolk Mind

Suicide remains a leading cause of death across generations, with men making up 3 in 4 suicides. The campaign is funded by Public Health Suffolk and aims to make suicide prevention a shared community responsibility.

Launched during Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, the film encourages us to ask people we know are struggling with challenges if they are affected by thoughts of suicide.

Ezra Hewing, Suffolk Mind’s Head of Education, said: “Suicide prevention campaigns often focus on the need for men to ‘open up’ and ask for help. But researchers have learned that many men affected by thoughts of suicide have been in contact with services in the months leading up to their death. So ‘opening up’ or ‘reaching out’ can’t be the only answer. We are missing opportunities to ask about suicide before tragedies occur.

“If people are feeling trapped and alone with the problems they face, there’s a need for the community to reach out to them and ask the question, “are you having thoughts of suicide?”

“It can feel uncomfortable to ask that question, but if we don’t, we might miss the opportunity to help someone cope with thoughts of suicide. Asking a difficult question can save someone’s life.”
