MËSTIZA - Spanish Chica

MËSTIZA - Spanish Chica

Jaime Dezcallar

Spanish Chica is a 16-minute visual film accompanying the new album by Mëstiza.

The film traces a journey from traditional flamenco and Spanish folklore into nightlife and contemporary club culture, guided by the choreography of Carmen Beltrán. Structured as a continuous flow rather than a linear narrative, it moves like a music session — where transitions blur the boundaries between tracks and emotional states.

A key reference throughout the process was Carlos Saura’s Carmen (1983), whose approach to flamenco, rehearsal and performance shaped the visual language of the film.

Shot in a single day in Aranjuez, Spain, Spanish Chica was built through an extended and fragile pre-production process that nearly collapsed several times before coming together. No AI was used in its creation — everything was achieved through choreography, light, costume, camera movement and physical performance.

The film is a collaboration with long-term creative partners including producer David Oeo, cinematographer Enrique Millán, steadicam operator Diego Comendador as well as longtime collaborator and director Paul Stein.

At its core, Spanish Chica approaches flamenco and Spanish folklore as living forms — not nostalgic references, but materials in constant transformation within contemporary culture.
