The Pediatric Cardiac Arrest Algorithm for 2 or More Rescuers is built around one major advantage: multiple providers can perform critical steps at the same time. One rescuer stays with the child, while another activates the emergency response system and gets the AED/defibrillator, helping reduce delays to CPR and defibrillation.

In this lesson, the first priority is to recognize arrest fast. For healthcare professionals, the current pediatric BLS algorithm calls for checking for no breathing or only gasping while checking the pulse simultaneously, with the pulse check limited to 10 seconds or less. If the child has a pulse but inadequate breathing, support ventilation immediately by opening the airway, repositioning, and giving 1 breath every 2–3 seconds, then reassess the pulse after 2 minutes.

If no definite pulse is felt, CPR starts right away. The first rescuer begins 30 compressions and 2 breaths, and when the second rescuer returns, the team switches to 15 compressions and 2 breaths. The AED/defibrillator should be used as soon as it is available. For shockable rhythms, deliver 1 shock and resume CPR immediately for 2 minutes.
