City Map, by Olivia Block, is created from a group of materials--found micro cassette tapes and 35mm slides, which manifest in several configurations, including audio/visual installation, radio broadcasts, video, and surround sound audio performance. Source materials range from the 1960's-1990's, mostly from America.

A Cleveland area photocopy machine salesman in 1988, records himself on a microcassette, counting hypnotically as he drives through office parks, logging lists of business addresses. Live municipal audio scanner feeds are blended with tonal sounds from archival short wave radio broadcasts. Projected 35mm slides featuring aerial views of downtown Chicago circa 1965 are inter woven with images of snowy houses in the Midwestern American suburbs in 1965. These vivid aural and visual recordings create monuments on a spaciotemporal map. City Map manifests a constellation of locations where the specious present (what is here), the past (what was here) and long durations of time passing elsewhere, may be experienced simultaneously.
