The Borealis Paddling Expedition, which launched earlier this month from Great Slave Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories, is the kind of ambitious two-month undertaking that requires a good deal of gear. Canoeing by way of the Emile, Coppermine, Kendall and Rae rivers to Kugluktuk, an Inuit outpost on the Arctic Ocean coast, the team (Meg Casey, Nina Emery, Beth Halley, Karen Stanley and Emily Stirr) will be carrying an impressive area of tents, sleeping bags, small electronics and outdoor kitchen accessories, along with some flat-out cool gizmos. Before their departure, Emery took time out from preparations at Stirr's parents' residence on Madison's far west side to introduce some of the equipment they'll be relying on in the coming weeks.
