Touted as a tool for economic development, the mobile phone’s taken a firm hold in India’s cities. But the story’s more varied in rural areas. And it is not all down to patchy networks. Mobile phone use by women is frowned on in some areas. But women and Telcos are fighting back. And as David Reid discovered, mobiles are becoming more than just a mouth-piece; for some women it’s a means of securing credit, saving and getting economically active.
