The Gothic Revival St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a symbol of Catholicism and accommodates over five million visitors each year. The Cathedral campus is currently undergoing a comprehensive conservation and systems replacement project led by Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects. This is a multifaceted effort designed to launch St. Patrick’s Cathedral into the next thirty years. In addition to exterior and interior conservation, the project includes substantial life safety improvements, program expansion and new sustainable building systems. Through the lenses of craft and technology, we will explore a wide range of topics including our overall design strategy, building fabric conservation, water mist fire suppression, geothermal heating and cooling and stained glass conservation. We will also describe our use of BIM 360 and how it has enabled us to efficiently track over 10,000 work scopes and communicate effectively with our team. With myriad design, preservation and technology components, there is something relevant for all design professionals in this presentation.
