In support of the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championships, Canadian Tire teamed with Thinkingbox to produce an interactive installation that put hockey fans to the test. The Big Play activation used cutting-edge software and technology to challenge users to take their best shot against a virtual goalie. To build the most realistic and intelligent goalie possible, Thinkingbox used motion capture for precise body movements, and Kinect 2 to accurately react to the users shots. Players were positioned in front of a 92” HD display housed within a 120 sq. ft. simulation hockey rink. As the shooter took their best shot using a hockey stick and tethered puck, their exact movements were tracked, triggering the goalie to make a save in real-time as the puck left the stick.
