Full Title: Out of Line: A Model for Peer-Led Queer, Trans, and Two-Spirit Cult Survivor Support Groups
Authors: Mitchyll Mora, Micah Damsky
Abstract: In this presentation, we will go over the techniques and tactics we used for the foundation of our peer-led LGBTQIATS+ cult survivor support group that is based in NYC, Out of Line. Out of Line was founded in October 2025 and meets once a month in person and once a month on Zoom. Facilitated by queer and trans cult survivors, the group offers a safe, non-hierarchical, and secular group container to share feelings and experiences on a variety of topics related to cult recovery, queer identity, and their intersection. The group also explores a range of readings to provide tangible education and resources on cult recovery. We will discuss key learnings from our first year of group, including outreach, finding a space, and facilitation tips, then run a model support group for conference attendees. Participants will receive information on how to start similar support groups in their own communities, including a meeting script and a compilation of readings used to date. Facilitators will offer ongoing support to any participants seeking to start their own meetings. This is an anonymous, survivors-only workshop; no journalists, media, onlookers, or loved ones of survivors are permitted. Those who are questioning their queer identity or survivor identity are welcome.
