Pachube (pachube.com), a convenient, secure & scalable platform that helps you connect to & build the 'internet of things' has grown immensely in the last year.
We're now dealing with millions of datapoints every day from sensors, objects, devices & buildings around the world. This is a visualisation to help us understand where in the world all that data is coming from and how it changes over the course of a day (if at all).
It's built in Processing, and extracts information from our server logs (and from the feeds themselves) to work out what is connecting to where, and distinguishes devices that are pushing data to Pachube from those that are pulling data from Pachube. The shadow map on the globe is accurate (i.e. it moves with the day) but of course the rotation has been speeded up, so that you can see all sides of the planet!
If you would like to see the difference from a year ago, here's what we released back then: youtube.com/watch?v=pi4MhQgGNqI
