Talk given to the Radical Anthropology Group at The Function Room, The Cock Tavern, 23 Phoenix Road, London NW1 1HB on 24 February 2015. Mark Jamieson is a lecturer in anthropology at University of East London and is currently researching land rights and the effects of narco-trafficking on the economy of NIcaragua's Mosquito Coast. He has conducted fieldwork with the Miskitu (and more recently Ulwa) of eastern Nicaragua and his theoretical interests include economics, money, counterfeiting, and linguistics. He discussed various hypotheses about the origins of money and the various meanings of the varieties moneys that are used in different societies.
