The non-profit project, Operation Black Hills Cabin, started in 2011, as a way to say thank you to our qualified combat-disabled veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. They are granted a one week respite for their immediate family in a three bedroom, two bath cabin granted by the SD Housing Authority.
Since being officially established prior to the summer of 2013, families from 21 states have been guests to the Custer cabin. Not only do they experience the serenity of the Black Hills, but also the hospitality from local businesses and volunteers that make the stay possible. This is their story:
