Addiction as a whole causes nearly 2.1 million hospital Emergency Department visits according to a report from 2009, and indirectly affects even more. This video shares the inside story two different individuals and the battles they face with addiction. Paul Schaunfer, now a CEO of a large Bartending school, shares his emotional hardship with how drug overdose affected him and his family. Richard C* (who has requested his last name to be anonymous) is a Business Developer who shares the methods he uses to maintain sobriety.
According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), (81.1%) of the 43,982 drug overdose deaths in the United States were unintentional, (12.4%) were of suicidal intent, and 2,801 (6.4%) were of undetermined intent (from a report ran in 2013). Richard urges those battling with addiction to seek help and not be afraid to reach out to others. Similarly, Schaunfer advices people to distance themselves as best as possible and to engage in meetings like AA and NA.
