We hope this video will inspire photographers by showing just what can be achieved with a bit of ingenuity and a lot of imagination in a relatively small space.
We think our studio is pretty unique! When we decided we needed our own studio in 2001 we made the decision to build one from scratch so that we would have exactly what we needed.
Our house is detached and had plenty of space for a large 2-storey extension, so planning permission was applied for and granted and on January 2nd 2002 building work began. It took the best part of 12 months to finish as we did the majority of building work ourselves, but it was so worth it. Having our business totally self-contained but adjoining our home is perfect for us. We have our office space downstairs and then our studio with adjoining toilet & shower room is up the spiral staircase
Whilst having a larger studio would be great in some respects, for Boudoir Photography the size of our studio is perfect. We always manage to keep it warm and cosy even in the middle of winter and the space is not overwhelming for nervous clients like a warehouse studio would be.
But having limited space does inspire your creativity! From the very beginning of Mighty Aphrodite in 2004 we came up with the concept of offering different studio sets. We wanted to offer our clients variety so that they could personalise their shoot from soft romantic boudoir to more erotic fetish-styled images (or do a bit of both if they want!). We were the first boudoir studio in the UK to offer clients this kind of choice for their shoots.
We started out with ideas for four different styles and used lots of different types of backdrops at first. Then we designed our floor-to-ceiling blackout panels which gave us much-needed storage space and a versatile simple way of creating different backgrounds for our pictures. This revolutionised our shoots giving us a myriad of options including being able to mimic real daylight through a fake window.
Our studio sets have changed over the years – some have been dropped because they were too complex and others have evolved as we got better at our craft. The eleven sets we currently shoot are all popular and we have many clients who come back for several shoots so that they can try out the different styles. We continually strive to get the most out of our studio and come up with new concepts...lots of our best ideas have been inspired by clients' suggestions. Over the last couple of years we have also branched out into producing videos for private and corporate clients, so our little studio is proving to be very versatile indeed!
