Just because Excel Video 184 starts into what Excel calls Math & Trig functions, don’t skip these videos. I promise not to get into cotangents and logarithms. There are several powerful features in this section of formulas that can make a medical practice manager’s life easier.
We’ll start with a basic function, SUM. Excel will let us do a conditional sum with a function called SUMIF. SUMIF allows us to look at a range of data, set criteria, and then sum the values that meet the criteria. One of the cool things about SUMIF is that the criteria can look at one range of cells while Excel summarizes a different but corresponding range of cells. In today’s example, we’ll look for an insurance name in Column A. If Excel finds the insurance we’re looking for, we’ll tell Excel to sum the corresponding row’s value in Column B.
Be sure to note in the video that while I use the F4 key to lock in the criteria range and the sum range so they don’t change, I do let the criteria cell change. That way, when I copy the cell, the criteria and sum ranges stay the same while the criteria cell updates to reference the next cell.
