Hypercycle (2013-2014) by Francisco Bernardo
Hypercycle situates within the boundaries of digital art, embodied interaction and interactive audiovisuals. It was produced and exhibited at Catholic University of Portugal in Porto, Portugal.
This artwork is inspired on the work of Manfred Eigen and Peter Schuster (Eigen & Schuster, 1977, 1978a, 1978b), a trilogy in which they develop the Hypercycle as model for the chemical origin of life. This model, which is highly influenced by Darwin's principle of natural selection, attempts to explain the self-organization of prebiotic systems through the cyclic linkage of reaction cycles as an explanation for the functional organization and demonstrates its relevance with respect to the origin and evolution of life.
The author hereby acknowledges the Agency of Innovation (Agência de Inovação, ADI, Portugal) and Quadro de Referência Estratégico Nacional (QREN, Portugal) that through COMPETE - Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade (POFC), provided funding for this work in the project “VisualYzARt: Visual programming framework for augmented reality and ubiquitous natural user interfaces” (QREN-ADI ref: 23201)
