Contrary to many sectors in Africa the production of Shea butter in West African countries is completely done by women.
Shea butter is made from the nuts of the African Shea tree that only grows in the Sahel region. It takes 15 years before the tree starts producing nuts.
The Shea butter is mainly used by African women as a moisturizer for the skin. It protects the skin against cold weather, uv-radiation, eczema and burns. Big cosmetic firms in the Western World are using the butter in their products.
