How to Train Your Coral

Coral bleaching is a huge threat to the planet's coral reefs. Instead of dwelling on the doom and gloom of the future oceanic conditions that corals are facing, Dr. Ruth Gates of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology is using cutting edge technology to try to understand the processes at work deep inside coral tissues. With the knowledge she has gained, she is now trying to help corals adapt to a warmer ocean in hope that coral reefs will be able to continue to exist in the face of climate change. Our production team visited with her on the Windward side of Oahu to get a glimpse into her approach at finding a solution for this imminent threat.
