Developing a cooperative working relationship with the operator helps the inspector learn important information about the operation. Wise old wizard Dr. Water pops in when needed to instruct inspector Janet Reynolds as she conducts two different site inspections. Topics include: preparing for the field visit; source protection; site security; sanitary risks associated with well vents, blow-offs, and appurtenances; safety hazards; and system reliability.
Created for the U.S. EPA Office of Water by the National Environmental, Safety and Health Training Association, the "Before You Begin..." series of videos are intended for training and refreshing the knowledge of state drinking water sanitary survey inspectors, just prior to an inspection. The videos in the series often also are used in public community sessions and councils to inform the public about the responsibilities and difficulties faced by local officials in maintaining their public water facilities, particularly small systems.
