A video presentation for Roosevelt University's Focus On The First Year, 25 April 2015.
In this video I use the frame "Authority is Contextual and Constructed" from the Association of College and Research Library's (ACRL) "Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education" to explore and assess student understanding of the concept of dicsipline. First year students use basic indicators of authority like discipline to move closer to master of the concept of contextual and constructed authority. But what do they know about discipline? I describe results of an in-class multiple-choice test that asks students to choose a definition of discipline and identify scholarly articles, and women's studies articles from a group of citations. I then review and teach these concepts and give students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning with a new set of questions.
