After viewing this video, you will never forget to check for potential health hazards in a water system’s storage facility, regardless of its shape and size or whether it is underground or elevated. The "dead birds" theme song, images, and narration will indelibly imprint these messages: birds, bats, and bugs are real public health threats; check for adequate pressure, quantity and quality of storage water; look for common sanitary defects in vents, hatches, overflows, and cathodic protection plates.
Created for the U.S. EPA Office of Water by the National Environmental, Safety and Health Training Association, the "Before You Begin..." series of videos are intended for training and refreshing the knowledge of state drinking water sanitary survey inspectors, just prior to an inspection. The videos in the series often also are used in public community sessions and councils to inform the public about the responsibilities and difficulties faced by local officials in maintaining their public water facilities, particularly small systems.
