White Shadows, 2015
graphite, pencil crayon, acrylic, gouache on paper
‘White Shadows’ is an animated short researched and developed in Berlin in 2015. The accompanying orchestral track, ‘White Shadows’ is from Canadian composer Lydia Ainsworth’s debut album Right from Real (2014).
The use of water as a visual metaphor for interconnectivity and as a symbol of life speaks to the unseen physical ecology of this planet, and on a micro level to the teeming inner workings (the subconscious depths) of the human mind. Reflecting on the ‘whole’, the wisdom of the natural sphere – cycles are recognised and respected as essential aspects within the process of becoming. There is music to this progression, even if it not immediately discernible to the senses.
Rather than work with a traditional narrative, the focus was to create an interplay with the song – something akin to the invisible dance that takes place within the subconscious mind as an underlying energy takes shape and beings to grow. A dance because the evolution of an idea (a shadow) is often non-linear, traveling miles intuitively up from the depths in trust before suddenly arriving into light.
