Hassina Sherjan, left Afghanistan for the US after the Russian invasion in the late 1970's.
She returned 23 years later when Hamid Karzai became president in December 2001. She founded Aid Afghanistan for Education, an organization that educates over 3,000 children across nine Afghan provinces. She also has started a retail business, Boumi, that makes placemats, coasters, pillowcases, curtains and other items. Boumi employs Afghan men and women and uses only Afghan textiles.
