Carving a cedar canoe is one of those projects I've been wanting to do for many years, though every time there seemed to be just one piece of the puzzle missing. If it wasn't the space in the workshop it was the time, if it wasn't time it was the tree. Whatever, finally this spring 2015 those struggling puzzlepieces are falling where I wanted them to fall. There's room in the workshop, we surprisingly found a cedar and we'll think about time later. Okay, the tree isn't exactly what I wanted - 80cm wide instead of 180cm, 60 years old instead of 600 - but hey, this is Belgium, not British Columbia.
So I gave it a go, starting with PART 1: cutting that cedar down.
