The Mahebodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India, marks the exact spot of the Buddha's supreme awakening. This location, with it's Vajirasana (Diament Throne) under the Bodhi Tree, and the shrine inside the Temple, are the most sacred sites for all Buddhists. We spent a whole week at this uniquely inspiring site, the highpoint of our Pilgrimage organised by Dhammagiri Forest Hermitage, and accompanied by Bhante Dhammasiha.
It is an ancient custom, reaching back to the time of the Buddha, to express reverence by circumambulating a sacred object 3 times in clockwise direction. We did so numerous times on our pilgrimage, fully immersing ourselves in the magic atmosphere, where Buddhists from all different backgrounds worship, chant and meditate together in beautiful harmony, each one following their own peculiar tradition.
