When it seems like the world is spinning faster and faster with change, innovation truly becomes a key success factor. If you do not disrupt your own business, someone else will do it for you. You have the possibility to improve your organization but your legacy might slow you down. Innovation is not about invention. It is not about doing new things but about doing old things but in a new way in your organization.
In this video, Greger Wikstrand and Joakim Lindbom use Lego to illustrate how innovation works today. Innovation is not about building everything from scratch but about combining your business strengths with those of your partners. With standardized interfaces, it no longer takes months but days or hours to start working together. But if you start to innovate on top of a huge technical debt, you are still stuck with a dysfunctional core. This shows the importance of application lifecycle management and application rationalization and legacy modernization in order to be able to innovate.
What is your unique value add? How can you do old things in new ways that are better for you and create problems for your competitors? The answer to that question is your key to innovation.
