All Begins With A: inspired by the SUNRISE
'All Begins With A: inspired by the SUNRISE' is Janneke van der Putten her long term project that started in the winter of 2012. During the transition of night into day she explores the sounds in the environment through a practice of walking, listening and singing. The first version of the project was from October 2012 until March 2013 and took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The second edition is done in December 2013 around the Island of Lake Vassivière, France. It was made during her residency in the Castle, at the Centre international d’art et du paysage, Ile de Vassivière.
In this project van der Putten has been investigating the sonic landscape of different public spaces. In the latest version of this project she inhabits the forestall area of an island, situated in a lake. The island was the inverted mode of a stereotypical lake, with the shape of a circle. The circle represents the form that one accomplishes. Walking around the island and finishing its circle, was a gesture parallel to that of one breath, with an rhythm of a begin and end at the same time. It also relates to a circular notion of the cycle of day and night with the movement of the earth around the sun.
'All Begins With A: inspired by SUNRISE' is coming from her vocal practice dealing with prolonged tones, originating from the Indian Dhrupad tradition and a technique called AKAR, such as taught by teachers Marianne Svašek and Amelia Cuni. A first exercise done in this practice is to sing on the vowel /a/ for a half hour before sunrise. Appropriating this exercise into her artistic practice she was interested in the merging of a daily training, daily life activities and a nomadic studio practice in the open air. The vocal exercise she employs holds a knowledge on how listening, breathing, small tone fluctuations and body posture are interrelated. Concentrating on this vocal technique, enables her to explore and perceive the acoustic qualities of the landscape or space she is in. She does this during the transition of night into day, starting before the sunrise. From her experiences in this daily listening and vocalizing she generates material that flows in her artistic work, as installation, as composition, as text or as performance.
The video ‘All Begins With A: inspired by the SUNRISE’, 2014, includes a voice-over and a sound composition. The voice-over is a selection of van der Putten's writings, made after the singing and listening at sunrise. They are interpreted by Frédérique Bruyas. The sound composition is mastered by Bobby Peru and contains field recordings made by Christian Galarreta. The sounds reflect what can be heard on that island. The video is made with the help of artist Capucine Vever. Together with Janneke, Capucine documented the one encircling of the island by canoe, on 21 December 2012. This was the day of the solstice and also the concluding day of this project on Vassivière Island.
