STRANGER ON THE SHORE
The curious sensibility of the English coast
It’s different by the sea. A bit strange even. Just as the coast lies at the ends of England geographically, it’s also at the edges of our society and the margins of our culture - a liminal, threshold place where little England meets the wide mysterious world beyond, which has always made it a site of myth, eccentricity, transgression and romance. STRANGER ON THE SHORE explores some of the odder and more intriguing places along the English coast, the mysterious pull these places exert, and the peculiar states of mind they engender.
As well as a physical landscape, our coast is also a psychic landscape with its own archeological layers of memories, dreams and fears, a palimpsest of jumbled histories and resonances that echo through time. STRANGER ON THE SHORE will interweave folk memory, everyday ephemera, myths, beliefs, history, geography, stats, personal memory, reportage, and a lyrical response to the spirit of place, creating a subtle, poetic, multi-layered ‘deep map’ of these magical, marginal places on the edges of England.
