A note on the structure of this film essay:
Parts of the textual component of this film essay have been taken from two essays. The first, “Know-how and No-how…” by S. Maharaj, has been summarized, following which, all phrases used to describe visual art production, its processes or methodologies have been isolated and collected. These phrases were then applied over the collage of film clips.
I shot all film clips myself between 2009 and 2014.
The second text that was quoted directly is the essay “On Future History ….” By Jan Verwoert. This essay was summarized and the quotes have served as a loose narrative/ structure for the film essay.
The production of this film essay was a process of summarizing, unpacking and close-reading both of these texts and finally creating a response in which the intuitive, associative and evocative intimacy of the video and audio clips hold equal sway to the structure of the traditional written essay format.
