From the earliest stages of planning the film, I knew I wanted to use subtitles in conjunction with a unique alien language to add a layer of reality to the characters. We were fortunate and honored to have the participation of the Kaingang of Brazil who got onboard with our idea to use their wonderful native pre-Columbian language as our "alien" language. In this sample set to early pre-viz, we hear the voice of Fernande Lourenço, a native Kaingang speaker, delivering dialog from the script which he helped to translate. That is followed by a clip from the final film of the same dialog delivered by actor Joe Cappelletti, who along with the rest of our LA cast, were able to listen to the language in an ADR session and then deliver the lines with a performance. We did this technique with all of the characters except Lufo, who was played by native Kaingang speaker, Samuel Hery, who gave us such a great performance he didn't need to be replaced. Thank you to Eipeen Hery, Ka'egso Hery, Isalina Lourenço and Fernande Lourenço, who made the Kaingang recordings in Brazil possible. And thanks to our talented LA cast, who were able to listen to an unfamiliar and difficult language and give us such great performances pretty much on the spot.
