Marisol Formigo Hurtado talks about how she and her coworkers are studying and cultivating beneficial insects to help control pests on Organiponico Vivero Alamar in Havana, Cuba. Many thanks to Miguel Salcines Lopez, President of the Organiponico Vivero Alamar as well as the friendly people who grow the organic, delicious food in this urban garden.
Through the introduction of beneficial insects, as described by Marisol, extensive worm composting, and growth of fungi, they grow delicious, organic and nutrient dense fruits and vegetables for the local people and several institutions. In some garden beds, they harvest five crops per year! As Americans discover the importance to our planet and human health by building soil and growing clean, tasty, nutritious food, we can learn a great deal from our Cuban neighbors.
