In 1979, we moved to Chicago where I began teaching filmmaking at Governors State University. Unlike the predominantly white Rhode Island School of Design, this was a multi-racial university and so was the village surrounding the campus. The White Oak neighborhood had been designed as an urban dream of Whites and Blacks living harmoniously side by side. I chose this story for my first class project.
